Troops & Trains – Herberton Military Weekend – 20 & 21 July 2024

Step back in time to the 1940s and experience the wartime era at the Troops & Trains – Herberton Military Weekend! Join us on Saturday, 20th July, and Sunday, 21st July, for an unforgettable event hosted by the Atherton Herberton Historic Railway and the Herberton RSL.

This weekend promises a captivating blend of history and family fun as we commemorate the period when thousands of Australian and American troops were stationed in army camps across Herberton, Ravenshoe, and Watsonville. These brave soldiers trained in jungle warfare here before heading off to battle in New Guinea, Borneo, and Bougainville during the Pacific theatre of World War II.

Bring the whole family to enjoy this immersive historical event, filled with engaging activities, displays, and memories of a pivotal time in our history.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to relive the 1940s and honor the troops who trained and fought for our freedom.

Mark it in your calendar, dress up in your 40’s glad rags (optional….but we’d love you to…and there will be prizes)

Trekking Back to WW2.” Be transported back to a bygone era, and share in the happy atmosphere as we stand together to capture all the aspects of this unique period in the history of Herberton and the Tablelands and bring to life the memories, the fun, the fashion, the music and the dancing of the era .

Saturday 20 July, 2024

On Saturday, the Herberton Historic Railway will play host to a jam packed day of train rides, military displays, stalls and interactive activities that will keep the family entertained for hours.

So much to see and do, children’s facepainting, colouring activities, old time games and races, and prizes. There are fun and frolics for the adults too, with Stretcher races amongst the offerings to have a go at.

While you are there, be sure to stroll around and admire the style of the classic cars and salute the humble jeeps of WW2. Their proud owners will be happy to have a chat.

Wander into the Railway Refreshment Rooms for a reviving drink or snack, have a famous Lions Sausage sizzle, or, if in need of something more substantial, stroll up to the main street to one of the Cafes to partake of their yummy offerings.

Be taken back in time with the fanfare of the arrival of the troop train at the Herberton Station and watch the Military parade as they make their way from the Railway to the commemorative ceremony at the Cenotaph. Wave to the troops and veterans as they march past and if you are lucky you may even get a salute from General Douglas McArthur himself, 5 Star American General in charge of the Pacific Campaign of WW2.

Sunday 21 July, 2024

Sunday, start the day with a breakfast provided by the Herberton Lions Club at Reflection Park at the Herberton Cemetery.

Enjoy poetry and stories from WW2 as the Lions Chefs dish up the makings for a delicious repast.

Whilst there take a guided stroll around the cemetery to meet some of the people who served their country in a time of war and learn something of their stories

That morning, hop aboard on a military bus tour to learn more about the training camps, where they were and some of the fascinating stories of that time in our history. Down at the Herberton Railway Station in John Street, the action continues with the train running all day and the Refreshment Rooms offering delicious snacks and drinks.
